The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain\, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century\, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon\, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve\, and later Halloween. All are welcome to come dressed in a costume for this Halloween Festival! \nCCVCA members are encouraged to participate in the home decorating and pumpkin carving competitions — make our neighborhood a spooktacular place to visit for Halloween! \n* To participate in the home decorating and/or pumpkin carving contests\, email at least one photo of your entry to Thomas.mccurdy89@gmail.com by noon on Saturday\, October 28. You may submit both a daytime and a nighttime photo to best show your home decorations and/or carved pumpkin(s).\n* A station will be set up if you want to bring your own pumpkin and carve it at the festival. If you plan to submit your on-site carved pumpkin for the contest\, please note the voting begins at 3:00 pm.\n* Voting on home decorations and pumpkins (submitted photos and carved on-site) will be done at the festival from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. There will be no voting on Facebook this year. The winner of each competition will receive a prize and be given a sign to put in their yard the first two weeks of November.\n* Spooky Trail participants must sign up on-site to be led by a guide.
