This year CCVCA will award 1-year, non-renewable scholarship(s) to graduating high school senior(s) whose parent or guardian is a current 2024 member of the civic association by the application deadline. The Paul A. Maltagliati Memorial College Scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, participation in school and community activities, a short essay, and a personal interview. The Scholarship Application provides more details about the process and required documentation. Please contact Scholarship Chairperson Greg Rheault at CCVCAscholarshipchair@gmail.com (with “CCVCA Scholarship” in the subject line) regarding the application, selection process, and the overall scholarship program.

All CCVCA 2024 graduating seniors are eligible to apply—regardless of high school attended or home-schooled—who are enrolling in a 4-year college/university, 2-year college, or trade or technical training. The online Scholarship Application must be submitted no later than April 3, 2024. During April 12-19, each applicant will have an interview with the Scholarship Committee. Scholarship recipient(s) will be selected and then announced at the CCVCA General Membership Meeting on April 25.

The dollar amount and the number of scholarships awarded varies depending on the funds available that year. Contributions are made by CCVCA members on the annual Membership Application and those attending events such as the Ice Cream Social. In Honor of Paul A. Maltagliati

The Maltagliati family moved into Country Club View in 1989 and lived on Lindsey Street. Paul Maltagliati passed away suddenly on June 25, 2012. He was the beloved husband for 26 years to Toni Maltagliati and loving father of Maria, Dominic, and Victoria. Paul was a large man with a big heart, and his proudest accomplishments were his children. He is fondly remembered as a family man of unwavering loyalty, strength, and service. He was an active member and a past Grand Knight of the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council 8600. Public service was important to Paul, so as a member of the civic association he volunteered and served as president. Beginning in 2013, the CCVCA scholarship was renamed in his honor.

Paul Maltagliati grew up in Prince George’s County, MD, and graduated from George Mason University with a BS Public Administration ’84 and MPA ’90. He attended GMU on a wrestling scholarship and was the university’s first-ever wrestler to qualify for the US Wrestling Federation’s national championships. His record of most-wins in a single wrestling season at GMU still stands. In 1981-82 Maltagliati qualified for the first of two consecutive NCAA Division I Championships. Throughout his career he set several school records, including the mark for total victories with 122. As a junior he earned a 39-7 overall record, including 25-0 in dual meets, and was heavyweight champion at NCAA East Regionals. In 1983, Paul earned a silver medal at the world Sambo (Russian wrestling) championships in Spain. He also was invited to the US Olympic Trials after graduation in 1984. Paul was awarded the Wayne F. Anderson Award for Public Service in 2006, which recognizes and honors outstanding alumni for their achievements and contributions to the university.

Maltagliati was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico. He was a natural-born leader who rose to the rank of Chief Deputy Sheriff for Operations for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his 1985-2009 tenure in the Sheriff’s Office, Maltagliati provided leadership and management at all levels of the agency through the invaluable community programs he initiated. One such project was the redesign and redeployment of the former Inmate Work Force, now known as the Community Labor Force (CLF). He was a member of the DC Sniper Task Force, a multi-jurisdiction law enforcement task force that arrested John Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo in 2002. His 2009 retirement was followed by a successful stint at an international security-services corporation.

Paul was passionate about wrestling and felt he could have grown even faster and more accomplished in the sport with additional support from an affiliated wrestling club. As he remained close to GMU wrestling after graduation, Paul recognized an increased need for an outside program as many college teams were being dropped. This spurred him in his last year of life to join forces with former wrestlers and coaches from GMU to form an organization, the Patriot Elite Wrestling Club. The Club supports and encourages amateur wrestlers in the Washington, DC, area to cultivate their skills on the mat and to pave a wider path for wrestling in Northern Virginia. The proceeds of the annual Paul Maltagliati Memorial Golf Tournament are used to support Paul’s dream.
